Referring to your Confidential Despatch of

1st. June, I have the honour to inform you that when it is definite- -ly decided that the services of Mr. E. Carpmael are no longer required by the Government of Wei-hai-wei this Government will be prepared to consider the question of his absorption in the Hongkong
Service.

It would, however, appear to be more appropri- -ate if he were transferred to either of the services of the
Straits Settlements or kalay States where some of the Chinese dialects spoken are more akin to Pekingese than is the Cantonese dialect which Mr. Carpmael would have to learn if he joined the Service of this Colony.
